Todos Santos Retreat Digest (1/22/26)

Another week has passed in our quaint Todos Santos retreat, and life here continues to gently ebb and flow like the tide at nearby Punta Lobos. The weather has been giving us a real treat recently, with daytime temperatures pleasantly warm, perfect for a stroll down Calle Benito Juárez or a leisurely afternoon at La Poza. The nights have been cool, ideal for cozying up with a good book or simply gazing at the star-studded sky.

Speaking of stars, I came across an intriguing story about Estrella Navarro Holm, a Mexican free diving champion. She describes the thrill of plunging into the ocean’s depths as a beautiful, spiritual experience, much like the sensation of flying but in slow motion. It’s a stark contrast to the visceral fear she used to feel about the ocean. It’s amazing how we can turn our fears into something meaningful and empowering, isn’t it?

On a walk through town, I noticed a subtle shift in the market stalls. The local produce seems to be leaning towards the seasonal changes. I overheard a vendor talking about the botanists being called in to protect the natural areas of Baja California Sur against a multinational company planning to set up a gold mining operation. It’s always heartening to know that people are fighting to preserve the natural beauty that makes Todos Santos so special.

Sea turtles have been a topic of conversation lately, too. Apparently, female sea turtles have a fascinating reproductive habit of storing sperm from multiple mates for extended periods. Makes you appreciate the complexity of nature, doesn’t it?

There’s been a bit of chatter about some local happenings as well. A small gathering at the vineyard of Las Tinajas garnered some attention, with live music and wine tasting creating a festive atmosphere. I also heard about a farewell concert at La Morena, a cherished local spot that’s retiring after years of serving delicious food and hosting local music events.

Art is always alive and well in Todos Santos, and this week was no different. A quiet art opening took place, showcasing captivating street art. It’s always a joy to stumble upon these displays of creativity during an afternoon stroll. Meanwhile, music lovers were treated to a night of poetry and music at the Todos Santos Winery, a testament to the thriving local arts scene.

And that’s life in Todos Santos for you. It might not always be bustling with activity, but there’s always something going on if you know where to look. Whether it’s a shift in the weather, a quiet art opening, or a lively discussion at the market, there’s a simple, grounded beauty to everyday life here. Until next week, happy exploring!
