Todos Santos Retreat Digest (2/5/26)

Another week has gone by here in Todos Santos, and this small, vibrant town continues to be its usual self, offering a blend of the simple and the complex, the mundane and the extraordinary. As always, the weather has played its part, shaping our days around its whims and fancies. We’ve had a stretch of warm days, perfect for a dip in the sea at Punta Lobos or a leisurely stroll down Calle Benito Juárez. But then, as if to remind us that nothing lasts forever, the evenings have been slightly cooler, urging us to seek the warmth of our homes or the local cafes.

Amidst the slow pace of everyday life, a quiet art exhibition was held at the cultural center, showcasing works that captured the essence of the town. The artists, some local and others from nearby Pescadero and Cerritos, used vibrant colors to depict the town’s landscapes, its flora, and its people. The exhibition was a testament to the thriving art scene in this part of Baja California Sur, a scene that continues to grow and evolve.

On the environmental front, a group of botanists have been making waves with their efforts to protect the UNESCO-certified natural area from a proposed mining operation. The botanists, who work for CONANP, have been using their knowledge of the local biodiversity to argue against the mining project, highlighting the potential harm it could cause to the unique ecosystems of the region. This ongoing struggle between conservation and commercial interests is a recurring theme in this part of the world, and it’s always interesting to see how these conflicts play out.

On a lighter note, the sea turtles have been making their annual appearance, delighting locals and visitors alike. These creatures, with their unique reproductive habits, are a source of fascination for many. In fact, I’ve heard the phrase “Son of a Turtle!” being used more than once in the local market, a testament to the impact these creatures have on our local culture.

Speaking of the market, it’s been a good week for fresh produce. The seasonal fruits and vegetables are in abundance, and the stalls are a riot of colors and aromas. One can’t help but be drawn in by the sight of ripe mangoes, juicy tomatoes, and fresh herbs. A visit to the market is a must for anyone on a Todos Santos retreat, whether you’re a foodie or not.

On the musical front, there have been some interesting happenings. A local musician, Jenelle Aubade, has been performing at various venues around town, drawing quite a crowd with her unique blend of original songs and tributes. And then there was the wine tasting event at Las Tinajas, which featured live music and tapas, providing a delightful sensory experience.

As we head into the next week, there’s a palpable sense of anticipation in the air. Will there be a sudden shift in the weather, a surprise event, or a new development in the local scene? Whatever it is, we’ll be here, soaking in the everyday magic of Todos Santos.
