Todos Santos Retreat Digest (10/2/25)

If you’ve ever wandered down Calle Benito Juárez in the early morning, you’ve likely felt the slight chill in the air that signals the start of the day in Todos Santos. The kind of chill that makes you wrap your scarf a little tighter around your neck as you make your way to the local mercado. This past week, that morning chill has lingered a bit longer than usual, making for some beautifully crisp and sunny days. And while it’s not exactly winter coat weather, it’s been a refreshing change of pace from the usual steady warmth we’re used to in our corner of Baja California Sur.

Strolling around town, you can’t help but notice the latest burst of activity at the cultural center. A new art exhibit is in the works featuring local artists, many of whom draw inspiration from the stunning natural beauty of the area. The opening, like most things here, will be a low-key affair. A chance to admire the art, chat with the artists, and perhaps enjoy a glass of wine. If you’re staying in one of the nearby Todos Santos retreats, it’s worth making the short trip to town to take in the local art scene.

Speaking of nature, it seems that the biosphere reserve has been in the news again. This time, not for any controversial mining operations, but for something far more exciting – the sea turtles. These fascinating creatures are a sight to behold, especially when you consider their rather peculiar reproductive habits. Here’s a fun fact: a female sea turtle can store the sperm of multiple males for years, resulting in a litter of baby turtles with multiple fathers. Talk about a complicated family tree!

And speaking of the sea, it’s hard not to be captivated by the allure of free diving. The concept of plunging into the ocean depths with nothing but a wetsuit and your own lung capacity is both terrifying and exhilarating. It’s a sport that requires as much mental strength as physical, and the sensation of free falling through the water is said to be incredibly spiritual.

As for the local music scene, it’s been as vibrant as ever. From the intimate acoustic sets at the vineyard of Las Tinajas, to the farewell concert at La Morena, there’s never a shortage of live music to enjoy. The local musicians, many of them expats who’ve made Todos Santos their home, bring a rich diversity of sounds and styles that reflect the eclectic mix of cultures in this town.

So, as another week wraps up in Todos Santos, it’s clear that while not every week needs to be special, there’s always something happening if you know where to look. Whether it’s a shift in the weather, an art opening, or a sea turtle making its way to the shore, there’s always a story to tell in this charming little town.
