Todos Santos Retreat Digest (4/2/26)

There’s a buzz in Todos Santos this week, a quiet hum of activity that’s as comforting as the cool shift in weather we’ve been experiencing. After a stretch of warm days, the temperature has taken a dip, and it’s been delightfully cooler in the mornings and evenings. It’s the kind of weather that inspires long walks along Punta Lobos or a visit to the vibrant local market where the season’s bounty is on full display.

I took one of these leisurely strolls just the other day, and found myself pleasantly surprised by the array of fresh produce available. The market stalls were brimming with a variety of fruits and vegetables — a clear indication of the region’s rich biodiversity. On a somewhat related note, it’s worth mentioning the remarkable efforts of the staff of CONANP (The National Commission of Natural Protected Areas) in Baja California Sur. They’ve been working tirelessly to protect this biodiversity, and their dedication is truly commendable.

Speaking of nature, the sea turtles have begun their annual pilgrimage to our shores. Witnessing these magnificent creatures undertake their journey is a sight to behold. And if you’re lucky, you might even spot a free diver or two exploring the depths of the ocean. It’s a fascinating sport that requires a mix of mental strength and physical stamina. Mexican free diving champion Estrella Navarro Holm has been known to describe the experience as a “beautiful, spiritual experience”.

As for the cultural scene, there’s been a series of art openings and performances around town. The cultural center, for instance, has been hosting a series of intimate art exhibits. And then there’s the local music scene — a mix of live music, wine tastings, and tapas — that’s been livening up the Calle Benito Juárez. There’s just something about the combination of good music, fine wine, and delicious food that brings people together.

And if you’re in the mood for a little adventure, a short drive to the nearby areas of Pescadero or Cerritos is well worth the trip. I recently ventured out to Pukarua Atoll and Amanu Atoll in the Tuamotu Archipelago, and the untouched beaches and pristine diving sites were truly a sight to behold. Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or a casual tourist, these locales offer a refreshing change of scenery.

So, that’s what’s been happening around our Todos Santos retreat this week. It’s been a blend of cool weather, fresh market finds, nature sightings, cultural events, and nearby adventures. But then, that’s the beauty of this place. There’s always something to see, something to do, something to discover. And even in its quiet moments, Todos Santos continues to charm with its laid-back vibe and natural beauty.
