Another week has rolled around here in Todos Santos, bringing with it a subtle shift in the weather and a noticeable change in the town’s daily rhythm. After a string of days that could be described as ‘toasty’ and ‘sultry,’ we’re now easing into a more moderate phase. It’s still warm, of course, but the edge has been taken off the heat, making the midday sun more bearable and the evenings pleasantly cool. The softening of the weather has a knock-on effect on the pace of life too, with locals and visitors alike embracing a slower, more relaxed tempo.
At this time of year, you can expect to find Punta Lobos bustling with surfers chasing the perfect wave and families enjoying picnics on the beach. Over at La Poza, birdwatchers are treated to a spectacular show as the wetland habitat attracts a myriad of bird species. If you’re in the mood for a leisurely stroll, Calle Benito Juárez is your best bet, with its charming boutiques and mouthwatering eateries.
It’s not just the natural world that’s buzzing here in Todos Santos. This week saw a quiet art opening at our local cultural center, showcasing the work of several talented local artists. The event was a reminder of the vibrant and diverse art scene we have here, with pieces ranging from traditional to contemporary, and everything in between. It’s always inspiring to see the creativity that’s fostered within our town’s borders.
One of the more interesting bits of news around town involves an ongoing struggle between the staff of CONANP (The National Commission of Natural Protected Areas) and a multinational company. The company aims to set up an open pit gold mining operation in the surrounding natural area, but the CONANP team is putting up a strong fight, invoking the powerful forces of nature to protect their charge. It’s a poignant reminder of the delicate balance between human activity and the natural world.
On a lighter note, there’s been some buzz about the sea turtles. These fascinating creatures have a rather unconventional approach to reproduction, with each batch of offspring potentially having multiple fathers. It’s one of those quirks of nature that makes you marvel at the diversity of life on our planet.
And speaking of marveling at life, I ran into Estrella Navarro Holm, a local free diving champion. She shared a glimpse into her world, describing the exhilarating and somewhat terrifying experience of diving deep into the ocean, armed with nothing but the air in her lungs and her wet suit. It was a fascinating conversation, and another reminder of the depth and richness of experiences to be found in and around Todos Santos.
As one of the many Todos Santos retreats, we’re privileged to witness these shifts and changes week in and week out. There may not be a grand event or major milestone every week, but there’s always something happening, always a story to tell. Whether it’s changes in the weather, a quiet art opening, or a chat with a free diving champion, these are the threads that weave together the fabric of life here in Todos Santos.
After all, it’s the everyday moments, the simple pleasures, and the quiet observations that truly capture the spirit of this place. So, here’s to another week of living, observing, and appreciating all that Todos Santos has to offer.
