Another week in Todos Santos has come and gone, with the weather continuing to be the talk of the town. The days have been warm but not too hot, just the kind of weather that invites you to explore the local surroundings. And explore, we did.
Our first stop was Punta Lobos, a place that never fails to take my breath away. The sea was calm, the sky clear, and the air filled with a sense of tranquility. As we stood there, admiring the view, we spotted a group of sea turtles in the distance. It reminded me of an interesting fact I had read about sea turtles – the female sea turtle mates with several males before nesting season and stores the sperm for extended periods, resulting in what scientists call “multiple paternity” for her offspring. It’s fascinating how nature works in such intricate ways.
Our next stop was La Poza. The place was abuzz with the chatter of birds and the rustling leaves, a perfect retreat for those seeking peace away from the hustle and bustle. We spotted some unique flowers and plants, a testament to the rich biodiversity in the region. Speaking of biodiversity, I learned about the brave employees of CONANP (The National Commission of Natural Protected Areas) in Baja California Sur, who are committed to protecting the UNESCO-certified natural area from potential threats like open pit gold mining. Their approach of invoking the powerful forces of nature is indeed commendable.
After a relaxing day at La Poza, we headed over to Calle Benito Juárez. The streets were alive with local art, music, and people, each with their own unique story. We stumbled upon a local wine club gathering at Las Tinajas, where live music filled the air. The atmosphere was electric, and the local wine certainly added to the charm of the evening.
On a cultural note, we visited the cultural center where we met the Mexican free diving champion, Estrella Navarro Holm. Her stories of diving into the black of the ocean with just the air in her lungs and her wet suit, were inspiring and a bit terrifying. It’s amazing to see the extent to which human beings can push their limits.
As the week drew to a close, we decided to make a quick visit to nearby Pescadero and Cerritos. The change in scenery was refreshing, and the local markets were brimming with fresh produce. The sight of the lush green fields was a stark contrast to the desert-like terrain we were accustomed to in Todos Santos.
So, that’s been our week at this Todos Santos retreat. Full of exploration, discovery, and a whole lot of walking around town. As always, the charm of this beautiful town lies in its simplicity and its ability to surprise you at every turn. Till next week, adios!
