Todos Santos Retreat Digest (8/14/25)

Another week has slipped by in Todos Santos. The days are getting warmer, though nights are still pleasant, and there’s a palpable shift in the air suggesting summer isn’t too far off. The town continues to hum with a low-key rhythm that’s more about living than visiting. In this week’s update, we’ll talk about a few things that caught my attention while wandering around the area.

Gold Mining and Biodiversity

As I strolled past the cultural center, I overheard a conversation about a multinational company planning to set up an open-pit gold mining operation nearby. The locals seem to have a mixed reaction to the idea. Some see it as an opportunity for jobs and economic growth, while others are concerned about the potential harm to the area’s biodiversity. I was reminded of a similar situation in Baja California Sur, where the staff of a government-operated, conservation-driven institution had to face off against a large mining operation. They called in botanists and relied on the powerful forces of nature to help protect their land.

Sea Turtles

Walking along Punta Lobos, I came across a group discussing the complex reproductive habits of sea turtles. Apparently, a female turtle will mate with several males before nesting season, storing the sperm for later use. This results in “multiple paternity” for her offspring, which means baby sea turtles have no idea who their daddies are. It’s an interesting bit of trivia that adds a layer of intrigue to these fascinating creatures.

Free Diving

I also had the privilege of meeting a Mexican free diving champion in a café on Calle Benito Juárez. She shared her experiences of diving into the ocean’s depths with nothing more than the air in her lungs and a wetsuit for protection. Her description of the free fall – feeling as though her skin and wetsuit had fallen away, merging with the ocean – was surprisingly moving. It was a vivid reminder of the unique experiences and perspectives one can encounter in a Todos Santos retreat.

Music and Wine

On the entertainment front, there’s been a slew of impromptu music performances around town. From the vineyard of Las Tinajas to the retiring venue La Morena, talented artists have taken the stage, filling the air with melodies that perfectly complement the laid-back vibe of Todos Santos. There’s nothing quite like sipping local wine, enjoying tapas, and listening to live music as the sun sets.

In a more quiet corner of town, a poetry and music event at the Todos Santos Winery, Viñedo Las Tinajas, offered a different kind of cultural experience. The event featured local poets and musicians, adding a dash of creativity and intellectual stimulation to an already vibrant scene.

That’s all for this week. As always, life in Todos Santos continues at its own pace, offering a blend of nature, culture, and simplicity that’s hard to find elsewhere. Whether it’s the shift in weather, the unique wildlife, or the local events, there’s always something to discover in this corner of the world.
