Another week wraps up here in Todos Santos, and it’s been a week of contrasts – not least of which is the weather. It’s been a warm one, with temperatures hovering in the high twenties. But it’s not just the sun that’s been making us feel the heat.
On one hand, we’ve had the soothing, spiritual experience of competitive free diving champion, Estrella Navarro Holm, sharing her thoughts on the sport. Her descriptions of diving into the black ocean depths, of the feeling of the water in her body merging with the ocean, is enough to make anyone want to take a plunge into the Pacific at nearby Punta Lobos. Yet, while her words paint a peaceful picture, the reality of diving 70 meters into the dark with only the air in your lungs for company is far from tranquil.
Speaking of oceans, we’ve also been seeing a lot of sea turtle activity this week. These creatures have an interesting reproductive cycle, with female sea turtles mating with multiple males before the nesting season. This results in ‘multiple paternity’ for her offspring. So, if you’re taking a stroll along La Poza beach, keep an eye out for any maternal turtles.
On another note, there’s been some interesting chatter about the potential for an open pit gold mining operation in the nearby biosphere reserve. It’s a contentious issue, with big multinational companies on one side and the resource-restricted, conservation-driven staff of CONANP (The National Commission of Natural Protected Areas) on the other. It’s a reminder that, even in a town as laid back as Todos Santos, there’s always a bit of drama simmering beneath the surface.
And, of course, no week in Todos Santos would be complete without a nod to our vibrant local music scene. There’s been a lot happening at the winery, with sunset cheers, tapas, and live music, including performances by Klaudya Vega and Jenelle Aubade. After the show, many retreated to Violeta bar de Vino for an afterparty. And let’s not forget the farewell concert at La Morena, another beloved local spot that’s retiring after years of serving delicious food and good times to the Todos Santos community.
So, whether you’ve been enjoying the live music, getting involved in the local issues, or simply taking a moment to appreciate the beauty of our natural surroundings, there’s always something happening to keep the residents of our Todos Santos retreats entertained. And as we look forward to next week, who knows what will be on the agenda? One thing’s for sure: it’s never a dull moment in this Baja California Sur town.
But for now, it’s time to sign off and enjoy the cooler evening temperatures as they roll in from the Pacific. Here’s to another week in Todos Santos, where every day brings something new.
